The Story of Our First SDC Design Market

SDC successfully hosted its very first design market on 28th March.

This event marked not only our debut as a flea market host, but also an important starting point for SDC's next chapter.

Under the theme “Handmade Africa & Sustainability,” 23 vendors joined across fashion, accessories, home living, and food. Each brought a unique identity, collectively showcasing the value of African handmade products and sustainable practices.

More than just a marketplace, the event brought together NGOs and social enterprises—including APOYO, AITENGA, Reform Africa, 4 Africa, Faces Up, and Crested Women—who shared not only their products, but the stories and values behind them.

Around 130 visitors attended, ranging from international travelers to local professionals and students returning for the Easter holiday. The market became a space where diverse people, cultures, and stories naturally connected.

Families were also a key part of the day. With activity booths like bead bracelet making and kitenge postcard crafting, children stayed engaged while parents could enjoy the market—making the experience more inclusive for all.

This first SDC Design Market was more than a one-day event; it was a glimpse into what we aim to build moving forward—connecting people through handmade products, sustainability, and shared experiences.
